It can be scary to go to a new place, meet new people and try new things. We want to take some of the mystery out of worship at St. Matthew Trinity for you. Below we share some information on how our worship service generally proceeds.
All are welcome to receive the nourishment of soul that Jesus offers at the communion table. Lutherans teach that Christ is truly present in the bread and wine of Holy Communion. We offer traditional wafers, wine, and grape juice as well as gluten-free wafers. Participants of all ages who have not yet received communion instruction are invited to come forward for a prayer of blessing.
Items to occupy children are readily available and can be used just outside the sanctuary. A nursery space is also available for families with young children to use in the undercroft. A speaker system allows the supervising adult to continue to hear the service, while in the nursery with their child. There is a changing table in the upstairs bathroom and the nursery. Any member can help new families find these resources.
After service, a brief coffee break is often offered. This is a great time to greet old friends and meet new friends. Please take a moment to participate in this fellowship opportunity.
Come as you are. Be as you are. There is a place for you in the family of St. Matthew Trinity.
We invite you to come hear the Word and be nourished by our Lord.
The Lutheran religion was established on Oct. 31, 1517, when a German monk named Martin Luther started a movement known as the Reformation. In the simplest of terms, St. Matthew Trinity Lutheran Church focuses on the love of God and the amazing opportunity we have to foster a relationship with God.
More can be read about the Lutheran beliefs on the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) website. St. Matthew Trinity is part of the New England Synod of the ELCA.
St. Matthew Trinity Lutheran Church has a rich and unique history. The church we know now was formed in 1974 with the merging of two existing congregations: St. Matthew Evangelical Lutheran Church (est. 1891) and Trinity Lutheran Church (est. 1893). What made this merger extraordinary was that the two congregations came from very different Lutheran backgrounds. St. Matthew Evangelical Lutheran Church was a member of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, which was seen as a more conservative branch of Lutheranism in the United States, and Trinity Lutheran Church was a member of the Lutheran Church in America, which was viewed as the more liberal branch of American Lutheranism. United in their faith in Jesus Christ, these two congregations merged these very two different Lutheran families into one. Now known as St. Matthew Trinity Lutheran Church, the Pawtucket congregation once had dual membership in both the Missouri Synod and Lutheran Church in America until the congregation voted to affiliate itself solely with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (the successor to the Lutheran Church in America).
Besides coming from different Lutheran denominational backgrounds, the two churches also differed ethnically. Trinity Lutheran Church was primarily made up of Swedes while St. Matthew Evangelical Lutheran Church was made up of Germans. Like its forbearers, the congregation of St. Matthew Trinity Lutheran Church is a multicultural one. Today, the church boasts a large Liberian population. As Liberian refugees began to settle in Rhode Island when they fled the atrocities of the Liberian Civil War, they found a religious home that welcomed them in the name of Jesus. The church embraces the multiculturalism that has played a pivotal role in its history since the church’s inception.
St. Matthew Trinity has had many faithful and long-term Pastors over our 50-year history. We are now in the process of calling a new full-time Pastor. An interim Pastor is dedicated to supporting the weekly services and the needs of our community of faith.
Darlington Early Childhood Center, which rents space from the church, offers care to children ages 18 months to 5 years old. The day care and preschool was started in 1985 as non-religious support to families in our community. All staff are CPR and First-Aid certified. DECC offers a safe, warm, and enriching environment where children can develop the foundation for a lifelong love of learning.
St. Matthew Trinity offers a food pantry to the residents of Pawtucket. It was started in 1991 and is a vital support to the community. Hours available are Thursday from 9am – 12pm and the last Sunday of the month.
Members and regular visitors are encouraged to support the ministry of the church by participating in a variety of ways. Support is needed for youth and adult education options, supporting the weekly service, and other regular needs of the church. Fellowship over coffee hour and other meal opportunities is encouraged. Our choir offers beautiful music for holiday services and other times of the year, as they are able. Join us and share your gifts with the church as well as the community ministries.
